Double Daughter's Salotto
Double Daughter’s Salotto

Double Daughter’s Salotto is a unique experience from the moment your eyes take hold of the door, which looks like the entrance to the Wizard of Oz. This 12 foot-tall door is a little intimidating, but don’t worry - you’ll be able to open it.

Walking through the golden door feels like you’re going from Oz into one of Picasso’s dream. Growing in between the booths and in the corners of the bar are lit up trees wrapped in black linen. The trees draw your eyes up to the ceiling to see that there are white doves floating throughout the lounge, creating a creepy awning of birds and lights that belongs in a Tim Burton movie.

Once you’ve taken in the surroundings and settle down in one of the many booths that look like melting wax, you’re likely to notice the aroma of fresh dough and cheese. No, you’re not going crazy - you do smell pizza in this lounge. Double Daughter’s has same owner as Mario’s, which is next door, and that’s why you will find pizzas by the slice or pie on the drink menu.

Be sure to check out the top lounge, which has a great view of the entire bar and DJ, with a lot of space, but still a very private feeling.

Double Daughter’s has put in a lot of thought in decorating, and everything has meaning and a story to it, going back to the Italian legend of the Double Daughters, who were Siamese twins that loved to climb trees and briefly joined the circus. All of the fixtures from the doves in the trees to the axes in the banisters relates to the Daughters. You just have to ask if you want the whole ghost story.

The like to call their menu here international comfort food, and I can't argue with that. It feels like each menu item was taken from a different corner of the globe. The wait staff here is knowledgeable so feel free to ask about menu items. The bar has a hip feel and the bathrooms are worth checking out.

Emage Skate/Snow

If you’re at the Denver Skate Park, after traveling for who knows how long, and your board snaps or a bearing breaks, you might think that your day is ruined. But close by is Emage, arguably the best skate shop in Denver. This place also carries the latest men’s and women’s skate and snowboarding clothing, and has a vast collection of Nike SB, és and other skate shoes.

Emage is a large shop, in an “L” shape with the checkout counter at the kink of the room. Walk to the left and you’re immersed in a world of snow gear and talk of the mountains and the latest conditions. Or stroll to the right and you’ll find more of the street culture gear that goes hand in hand with kickflips and grip tape.

The shoes are what makes Emage a standout location. They carry some of the rarest colors and styles, especially the SBs that will often only put out 1000 pairs of a given style. Last time MapBuzz was there they had a Nike hi-top sneaker that had the look and mesh-texture of crocodile skin – and they have the shirt to match the kicks, understanding the importance of a coherent outfit.

The staff is made up of local skateboarders, who will help you pick out the right board setup for your style and ability, or let you know when you have to replace those worn out wheels.

Stop in if you need that replacement bolt before going to the park or pushing your board around downtown. But Emage is also excellent for your new shirts, shoes and the hat to match.

Spill
Spill

Spill has the feel of a knockoff open-air Brooklyn loft, with 20-foot high ceilings, and exposed electrical and heating units, giving it a stripped down look.

The crowd is more youthful than most of Market St., and the dress code seems to be black or dark shirt and jeans. Women wear the same, just tighter shirts and even tighter jeans. The last time MapBuzz was at Spill the bartender was wearing a shirt that said “I <3 Satan.”

The sound system is not the best but they’re aren’t shy about playing it loud. And of course there is a lounge area upstairs if you want to get away from the chaos that’s in the main, downstairs bar.

Spill tries to be the alternative bar even their motto is “A bar for the rest of us.” It’s a good spot for people that don’t want to listen to Journey, but also don’t want techno. While attempting to be different, and pulls in a slightly different crowd than most of LODO, the only aspect that really sets it apart are the nightly specials.  With nights like Monday’s “I’m and entertainer,” where all dancers drink for free.

Spill pulls in large crowds of people on the weekends, with a livelier scene than a lot of LODO bars. But in the end it’s nothing special -  with sub-par seating areas and booths Spill is nothing to go out of your way for.
