Kiki’s Japanese Casual Dining

When most people think of Japanese food they picture sushi, but there is much more than fish wrapped in rice. Kiki’s does serve sushi, but its strength is in its entrées and appetizers, which are exquisite and will encourage you to expand your horizons.

The sushi is small and not particularly flavorful, which is surprising because everything else is prepared with care and tastes great; you just have to stick to the soups, noodles, and rice dishes topped with an array of sea dwellers. If you only have one dish here, the Unadon Supreme is the MapBuzz clear favorite. It includes grilled eel, crab, avocados and rice separated by seaweed, with original thick sweet soy sauce covering all.

Kiki’s calls itself “casual dining” and the crowds tend to consist of groups of friends, but it’s also great for first dates, where a quiet setting can lead to some awkward silences. If you sit at the bar you’ll notice that the little knick-knacks covering the bar are quite interesting and offer plenty topics of conversation.

The theme of wood from the ceiling beams to the booths and bar gives Kiki’s the feel of a traditional Japanese inn. But the room is filled with Japanese pop music making it a hipper environment.

The authenticity is proven in every dish down to the miso soup, which is full of tofu. The pork dim sum type balls come in an elegant steam box. We also like the colorful ceramic glasses that the beer comes with. Don’t get too caught up in the Sapporo and not save some room for the wide variety of bizarre Japanese liquors.

Sitting at Kiki’s bar is an experience far from that found in most Denver Japanese restaurants. And the focus on the entrees rather than sushi allows you to explore other traditional fare. The food is unforgettable and is a MapBuzz favorite.

Average Meal: $15
